A Cultural Celebration at The Lively StreetFest

The 35th Annual Chinatown Summer StreetFest, organized by the Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce, kicked off in Oakland on August 24 with great enthusiasm.

The 35th Annual Chinatown Summer StreetFest, organized by the Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce, kicked off in Oakland on August 24 with great enthusiasm. The event was filled with displays of traditional culture, from unique foods and handmade crafts at the street booths to a Chinese painting exhibition hosted by the Sun Yat-sen Foundation, and continuous live performances.

The Shoong Family Chinese Cultural Center's booth on 9th Street was bustling with activity. Our teachers warmly introduced the center's history and current programs to interested parents. Meanwhile, student volunteers engaged children with various Chinese language games, such as Chinese character matching and spinning wheel literacy games, sparking the kids' interest.

Inside our Center’s gymnasium, the scene was just as lively with the Center playing host to the StreetFest Ping Pong Tournament. The competition was fierce, with players of all skill levels participating. They range from the wily older veteran players to an 8-year-old prodigy, whose incredible skills and focus left the audience in awe. Watching him battle it out with much older opponents was nothing short of inspiring.  The event attracted many of the top local ping pong players who put on quite a display of skills in the top division competition.

The StreetFest drew thousands of attendees, many of whom were passionate about Chinese culture. We were thrilled to be a part of such asignificant community event, which provided an excellent platform to share our educational philosophy and engage with a wider audience. Our participation underscored our commitment to spreading awareness and appreciation for Chinese culture.  We hope to continue attracting more families to join our school, giving more children the opportunity to learn and carry forward this rich cultural heritage.

The success of this event once again demonstrated our school’s vital role in promoting Chinese culture. We look forward to participating in more events like this in the future, as we continue our mission of cultural outreach and education
